Robert Lewandowski has scored 85 times in his last 100 appearances for Bayern Munich and Poland

Bayern Munich are top of the Bundesliga thanks to victory over Mainz as title rivals RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach played out an entertaining draw.

Robert Lewandowski headed Bayern ahead at Mainz and Thomas Muller doubled their lead with Thiago scoring a fine solo goal before Jerry St Juste’s consolation.

Hans-Dieter Flick’s side are now one point above previous leaders RB Leipzig going into next Sunday’s fixture between the teams.

Leipzig could have returned to the top had they beaten Gladbach, but they were relieved to have a point after coming from 2-0 down.

Fourth-placed Gladbach, who are three points behind Bayern, led 2-0 through goals from Alassane Plea and Jonas Hofmann.

Patrick Schick pulled one back after Gladbach keeper Yann Sommer dropped a corner and the momentum swung when Plea was sent off for two bookings for dissent in a row.

Christopher Nkunku rescued Leipzig with a wonderful 20-yard strike in the 89th minute.

Borussia Dortmund moved up to third place with a 5-0 win over Union Berlin.
